Slowly moving forward, but not ready to start selling again as not yet set-up in home/studio. Thus this post since it's been awhile. One of the last little paintings I rendered while still in my old studio.

While in San Francisco, we wandered off towards the weekend market area with lots of fresh fruits. Saw this dude leaning in for his pick of the crop. I bet it was delish!

I follow Southern Fried French blog and received my delivery when Lynn posted this morning in my email.  Titled: Life’s Little Lessons, in French and in Chocolate...

Wonderful words spoken in some French/English.  I'll present you the great pleasure of heading there yourself by clicking on her blog name above where I attached a link so that you may read more about her adventures of Americans who live in France.  Btw, I always appreciate chocolate truffles with abandon. (You will understand this statement when you read her post).

In the meantime, one of the things I frequent is to read a good quote.  Loved quotes even when a young teenager.  Such wisdom in a few words.

Now I really liked the first quote I listed below regarding art.  Of course, being an artist myself that would seem natural.  However, when perusing the rest of Lynn's quotes, the blue one below was a favorite.  So much so, I have it on my blog now.  Thanks Lynn!

A picture of the empty studio is the one and only photo I was able to take before the final move out. The boxes are full of 'stuff' to take with us. There were a lot more than that before it was all said and done. Two weeks is super fast to pack, have a garage sale, and move after living in a home for 11 years. Yikes and phew!

We're recouping and have moved into a furnished apartment temporarily. Hope to paint this week sometime after a bit more of life commitments are finished, like dentists, etc. Will try to get on and blog a bit more IF time & other obligations permit.

'Giant Lily Pads' 6x6, oil on linen panel

We are literally in the middle of moving.  Everything happened very quickly and we are up to our ears in packing paraphernalia.  I am trying to hold off packing up more of my glorious art studio until after the end of an auction on Daily Paintworks, I think it's over tomorrow.  The lily pads above are still wet, but I wanted to get one last posting in before the move.  It will be for sale after we're settled.

We hope to be settled by the beginning of the New Year.  I might be able to get some picts up of the goings on here and there IF I actually remember not to pack the camera, lol...  I do have my iPhone camera at the ready though.

We bought a turkey before the sale so we are going ahead with our Thanksgiving.  We will be living in a corporate apt until everything is settled and I will be bringing my pochade.  Oh thank God for pochades.  I'm going to try to hit up some of my artist friends and head out to plein aire paint.

Even if I paint and wipe out (good or not), I still HAVE to paint.  Bringing all of my sketching gear as well.  I'd say this is an opportunity to really watch some of my DVD's and some reading.  I'm looking forward to this great adventure God has in store for us.  I always love His awesome surprises.  

To all of my blog followers, thanks so much for your support.  I truly appreciate it.  I'll be back, better than before for sure cause cleaned out those dust bunnies & getting a new start on everything.

I have a basket on my bike and have to say that it serves a great many purposes. Like a glorious moment of a picnic lunch... Memories meant to be cherished.

This rather large juicy, meaty tomato is from one of Claudia's photos, but also from her Tomato Tarte Tatin recipe. I love tomatoes as well and decided right then and there to paint this mass of flavor wishing the whole time, I could have tasted that yummy tarte. I love to pick a fresh tomato from the vine and smell the stem. It's so earthy!

Open Studio 2011

The most glorious weather we've ever had and on both Saturday and Sunday. Monday was windy, which is always a bugger when you have to deal with it during outdoor events. It all went without a hitch this year.

Here are just a few photos from the Open Studio this last weekend.

Two shots of the studio. I have a huge 2-tiered steel wheel rack for larger paintings that is usually residing in the area where the little table/chair in the corner is. I have to move that every year or no one would be able to navigate in there.

I know this is not my usual fair. I was sketching and what do you know? An abstracted beach scene with a lounge chair? Who knew? What a great time painting this one. No form, just shapes, color, and repetitive patterns similar to another abstraction titled 'Hold On'.

Btw, 'Wishful Thinking' is just that, wishing to be sitting in a gorgeous space with very little on one's mind and just enjoying the peace of a blissful vacation. This painting is easily imagined in a vacation home or a space that is often viewed triggering the 'wishful thinking' response and perhaps even the motivation to make it happen.

This artwork has gallery wrapped painted sides and is ready to hang. Please keep in mind monitor calibrations, etc regarding color. Thanks!

Thanks to Jenny Pimmages for allowing me the pleasure to render these gorgeous girls in this dear sweet painting. I myself, have two girls and understand how they are the loves of our life. We're both pretty grateful to say the least. During the process of a commission, Jenny sent a few photos. I loved this one so much that I asked her if I could please have permission to paint it. Most of the windows in Europe sport gorgeous Red Geraniums in window boxes on 'each' window. I LOVE that, no matter the age of the building, the flowers bring the character of the architecture to life. This is a very loose rendering and full of expressive juicy brushstrokes. As a side note, kudos for me NOT touching the strokes once set down... I love it when I do that!

Saw this guy fishing 'on the rocks' while on a walk on the beach in Ventura. Catching this shot with his posture while casting was a lucky break. Kept the rocks rather abstracted as I wanted 'most of the focus' to go to him while still making it interesting enough to meander around the rest of the painting. The cool blue water is a lovely place to rest your eyes whether in a painting or actually looking at the real thing.

I remember sitting on our loggia sometime between the end of October, middle of November (CA weather, gotta love it) during the early afternoon with the fireplace roaring, drinking some really great coffee and by the time I looked up, it was almost evening. I had gotten THAT lost in time. No kidding! I'll never forget it, one those glorious life moments.

I've love sketching, I always will. Almost always with pen and in, even while (sort of) watching TV in the evening. It takes me to my calm place. My still place. I like that.

A 'very' simple, clean rendering of a tee on a hangar. So when I finished playing, I kept thinking about this and thought I'd like to see about 'sketching' it in paint. This is the end result. Keeping it simple, but not stupid, lol... Hope you like it as well.

Cabrillo National Monument and Point Loma Lighthouse, in San Diego is an incredible place to visit. There are the most amazing tide pools, which even the children, seem to respect. The colors are phenomenal when the sun highlights the prisms on the marine life found there. Just be sure to check the tide schedule so you don't miss out! Oh and we bring little picnic lunches and sit on a bench overlooking it. Now that's what I call living the good life!

The fact that the under-painting tone is visible throughout this painting unites it in a soft harmonious palette that makes the colors all the richer. This window sets above a violinists shop communicating the fact that 'yes indeed, if your violin is in need of repair', you've found the perfect place.

I love that all throughout Europe (at least the Europe that I experienced) has window boxes with brilliant flowers. And there always seems to be lots of reds, corals, and oranges. This looks to be a rather elegant arrangement due to the balconies beautiful woodworking. Another work of art in play. I can almost hear Le Vie en Rose playing softly in the background.

The very first time I tried artichokes was, believe it or not, in California. My husband and I had finally taken a long awaited trip all along the CA coast on Rt.1. There are no words to describe this, you just have to do it. Tim had mentioned that we taking this trip to a friend of his and he asked if we happened along a market or two, might we pick up a case of fresh artichokes. Sure, of course. We found beauties. Said friend proceeded to surprise us with some of the freshly prepared still warm artichokes and that was it. I was hooked for life.

So when Lynn from Southern Fried French posted this salad on her blog, I was there... Thanks Lynn! oh and ps - the painting looks so much better in person. I tried everything, but just can't get the glow to show on the bottle properly, lol

The moment I saw this woman's glow of reflected light from the refrigerated section of this market shop, I knew without a doubt that this was going to be an absolute joy to paint straight through from beginning to end... I'm sure I'm not the only artist out there that can say 'I love it when I stay this loose'. It's fresh, like the paint is still wet - I can almost smell wonderful gobs of paint as I look at it.

It makes every lesson, every book read (not just looking at the pictures, lol), every discarded painting, every angst moment, every plein aire study (including red ant bites, etc), all of the monies spent not just on supplies, but marketing mistakes (OR lessons learned), etc, etc - WORTH IT.

This was a shot from a trip my husband and I took last year on our 20th Anniversary to San Francisco. When you depart from the ferry, there are great shops and food markets all along the pier.

I love listening to songs of birds. It's like 'natural' music to my ears. I am especially loving the sweet Finches and the wonderful arrangements of Mockingbirds which are plentiful this time of year. The Finches in their usual habitat of the next door neighbors huge array of Cypress trees have nested in what I'm certain feel like Condos to us. The Mockingbirds are just altogether joyous. One literally perches atop a pine and leaps up with wings out while singing. These are the 'truest moments' in life that I am so very grateful for. Little snippets of visual aides...

The colors in the Avocado were very rich and I just loved the combination with the subtle hues in the Garlic as well.

Little Red Trike - SOLD

I remember my tricycle quite well to this day. We had some great times together. If you read the last post, you'll see that I'm still at it, but with two wheels, lol...

I really did have almost this exact same trike as a kid growing up on a very very high hill. Now with that said, being the tomboy that I was, legs out, no hands on handlebars, over sidewalks down the side of our house, woo hoo was heard many many times. Of course, there was that time that I was ejected off and learned how to fly very quickly. That one bump in the sidewalk got me. The sidewalk winded around to the front of the house, so it was in the grass or over a stone wall. I, thankfully, always made it to the grassy area. This would look so cute in a child's room, girl or boy's. After all, most girls love red!

We just got back from a trip to San Diego camping, wooo! We headed over from Coronado taking ferry to 'the other side' straight to lunch at The Gyro Spyro for real Greek food in Seaport Village. Another indulgence of the best kind was ice cream.

Tim & I always try to get a couple of cones in on trips such as these. He threatened my life if I put a photo of him on my blog, otherwise you'd see him in his Hawaiian shirt sporting a big grin as well.

We saved on gas and had only our bikes and it was great. The weather was awesome and the ferry ride was just plain fun, no driving of any kind for us. I guess you could say we got it goin on, at least that's how we felt. It was a much needed break. Hope everyone's Memorial Day was great!

Sometimes we just have to stop and think about which direction to take. Here's a fun look at a paint rule: 'no lead out of the painting... I could have had them looking to the inside and changed lots of things up in regard to placement (eg: the other dude is in the center) - oh nooooooooooo!

I liked it this way, it was so natural and wondered which direction they decided on when they finally took flight. I'm thinking left looks like it just might be the winner. Hoping everyone gets a chance to get water this weekend.

Helps to revive us and helps us to realize what we're here for, each other... that time is well spent and not squandered. No worries, no guilt, just peace... It's ok to just stop and relax. It's a time to re-energize and that's a good thing! A very very good thing. So enjoy! Read that book you keep holding onto and waiting to read. Stop thinking about that stuff. It'll all be there when you get back, but you'll be seeing it in a whole new perspective. One that get's it all done and then some. Now I'm hoping that someone would notice the slight twist of the left arm because she's 'negotiating' through very busy traffic. But just in case you didn't, I thought I'd point that out cause I think that one gesture makes it all the more readable, believable. She's got everything she needs in her pack and no doubt she is being 'green'. I personally LOVE my bicycle. A shout out to Frisbee's Bicycle Shop here in our little town to owner Barbara who really hooked me up. No strain whatsoever on my wrists, this was a big deal if I were going to go any distance worth noting. Plus my back doesn't hurt. Glad bikes have come so far along that they're actually comfortable. Love it and glad to be back in the saddle.

Papaya

This was one of the best Papayas I've ever tasted. Sweet, perfectly ripe and messy. Just the way I like it. I love summer fruit, but tropical fruit reigns queen of the taste buds... Looking forward to delights such as this through the entire upcoming summer. Love that there are fresh produce markets on the sides of the roads all over California.

I cannot even tell you how long I've had these little umbrellas - oh wait, yes I can. They came from our first trip to Hawaii. I don't save every little thing, but I did bring them back cause they are just plain fun. The little red one was injured and does not stay open, alas! But the blue one was sitting pretty in this little aperitif/vodka shot glass which I love to use for single flowers that I gather from anyplace, anywhere, anytime. I love live flowers. Flowers from a garden are just different from hothouse flowers. Even roses that are hybrid (you know the ones you get for Valentine's Day) have lost their magnificent smell. Not the one's that are, shall we say, homegrown. Yup, Spring is in the air and I am so there!

I love the color of this bottle, and the smoothness, and the creamy hue, and and and... I was excited that the tangelo still had an attached stem with leaves when I pulled it out of the grocery bag. So what else could I do but set-up a still life and get to it.

I ended up in one of those state of minds (or not) that us artists seek to discover every time we paint, at least I do. It's what I call a no-mind state. You have no idea what time it is, or where you are. Rather like being completely immersed in the painting itself, all of it. With the values being so close to one another on the bottle; I would have to say that overall, I am quite happy with the outcome.

Can you just imagine the 'wonder' of it all? The very very first time you 'experience' the ocean. I personally just love to watch little one's, especially when they are in a zone of sorts playing or thinking things out. It is absolutely amazing in every way. But to feel the soft salty warm water snuggle up on your toes with swirling sand, what must be going on in that extraordinary little mind? I wonder...

There are literally only bits of cool in this piece, all warm, all southwest. Like the rich earthen clay in the deserts. It's simple, but very strong and that's just from the colors. Even at this size (6 x 6), it insists on garnering attention from across the room. Stimulates the senses. At least that's my take on it.

After I had set this up, IT rather decided for me that IT preferred an old classic masters approach rather than a loosey goosey one. Something else happened while I was working on it, I went into a much slower pace, I actually realized I was breathing and relaxed and enjoying this tender process.

Since I seem to be 'one of those' artists that happen to be all over the place trying this and that and the other thing cause life is short and learning everything about painting is just plain where I land every single time (includes daily sketching). Well why not I say...

Fresh Table Grapes

I like to paint grapes every once in awhile, and actually other 'serious' still life subjects, not all loose, to keep me on my toes. I like variety, as well, like to try different things, basically I'm all over the place, but when one doesn't have to deal with brick and mortar galleries, I think it gives the artist a wider birth of creativity. We're not locked into one genre or style which galleries are insistent on doing with their stable of artists. The next couple of still life works are also classic in nature. I have to say I enjoyed working on them just as much as I do loose work. It feels like a breadth of fresh air.

A harvest at the very least is extraordinarily intense in the labor department. Especially in regards to the back area. This action shot takes place in France at Jean-Marc and Kristin Espinasse's vineyard. Kristen has a blog called French Word a Day. If you'd like to learn French or are a Francophile, you might consider meandering over there. My french, may not be up to par, but it's still fun visiting with Kristen and friends. By the way, if you do look around while there, you might notice many of the participating harvesters flat on their back, but not to worry, they're only stretching.

With thoughts of Spring and actually having to get out in the courtyard to 'help' the plants renew by cutting back the old, I wanted to get a gorgeous Peony in. Before opening up into an explosion of soft pastels, they are very pressed buds.

My grandmother loved them as well and had them lining a path to our door when I was growing up. One day I noticed that black ants were all over the buds and asked her about it - oh the kids and the why questions... Learned yet again another remarkable thing. The ants help the buds to open. Who knew?

Melissa. Friend, assistant, awesome nurse. I'm one of her biggest fans. She's the best!!! It was a great day. Looking forward to more of the same tomorrow... ps- honest, we both wore jeans and black shirt, but it wasn't planned. Great minds think alike.

Having a good time with friends... Leslie's in the middle, a great person if ever there was, but I am prejudiced. Another Barbara to the left, I finally met another Barbara and then, no kidding, two more as well.

Serious contemplation... aren't they cute! And yes, they did decide on a favorite painting.

This is the painting on exhibit for our local Open Studio Tour. The attendance last night at the reception was really great... "Low Tide", an 8 x 8 x 1.5, oil on canvas with painted sides sold last night for $275.00. Artwork commissions/sales at the exhibit/tour is another way for artists to get communities involved, maybe teach a child a bit or at the least expose them to some art and how much fun it is to go to the right side of the brain. Not to mention enjoying all of the wonderful people checking out the artist's studios and work.

Lots of art purchases were made, visits with friends and other artists were long overdue. All in all 'a great evening'. The tour itself is on the 23rd and 24th so I will be trying to snag pictures to post like I did last year. All I have to do is remember, lol...
